Since their emergence in 2005, Low Budget has established an enduring presence on the fickle Australian hip hop scene. Following the widespread buzz generated by their self-released mixtape in 2005, the group’s jazzy debut album Magnasound was one of the surprise success stories of 2006, drawing universal enthusiasm and praise from critics and fans alike.

On the back of the critical triumph and public acclaim of Magnasound, Low Budget quickly solidified their reputation as one of the most energetic and engaging acts on Melbourne’s live scene, amassing a long list of support slots for international acts such as People Under the Stairs, Atmosphere and J Live, and local names including Funkoars, Pegz, Muph & Plutonic and Downsyde. The process of crafting songs for their celebrated live show was instrumental in forging the group’s second long-player, Laserdisc.

Laserdisc sounds like nothing else on the market, with Low Budget’s producer and DJ, Debonair P, intertwining bone-rattling basslines with obscure disco and boogie grooves to create an intoxicating blend of thick dancefloor funk. Reinterpreting the sample-driven production philosophy employed by great hip hop producers of the past through his own mirrorball-swinging sensibilities, Debonair has emerged with an attention-grabbing sound that is entirely his own.

The neck-snapping harmonies emanating from Debonair’s sampler are perfectly complemented by the humour-filled and deftly-delivered lyrics of Low Budget’s MC, Gentleman Gene. The pair’s finely honed chemistry is aptly demonstrated on Laserdisc’s lead single ‘Tailor Made’, on which Gene nimbly delivers memorable line after memorable line atop one of the year’s best basslines. A versatile wordsmith, Gentleman Gene commands album highlights such as the poplocking ‘Freak Mystique’ and the raunchy ‘Knockout Performance’ with style, while engaging in conceptualism on ‘Saturday Night’ and ‘2082’ with equal finesse.

Eschewing hip hop’s current obsession with guest vocalists and producers, Low Budget again prove their individuality by holding their own throughout the course of Laserdisc. By channelling their individual strengths to fashion a skip-proof, unique and memorable album, Low Budget is certain to capture the attention and imagination of listeners of all persuasions.

Chasm & Vida Sunshyne – Move [2009] [Flac + 320kbps]

Obese Records are the label that defined what we now come to think as the archetypical ‘Oz Hip Hop Sound’. They have at one time or another been the label behind the majority of ‘Oz Hip Hop’s’ biggest acts. A genre specific label with a roster of acts, producers and MC’s that includes Muph and Plutonic, Hyjack N Torcha, Gully Platoon, Drapht, Illy, Pegz, Bias B, Gully Platoon and also used to release Downsyde and the mighty Hilltop Hoods.

That’s why it’s interesting to see them branch out. Perhaps marking a new era for the label, or at least an expansion, Sydney Producer Chasm has teamed up with Ghanaian born Melbourne resident Vida Sunshine to release an album that may well be the soundtrack to my summer. Yep, from what I’ve heard so far, its awesome!

Vida has worked variously with Australian acts like Mista Savona, Illzilla and Diafrix, guesting on various albums over the years but this full album of dubstep and reggae influenced beat is a step up. A whole album of gorgeous vibes, slick, bright and clever production with Vida’s rich voice and fantastic turn of phrase.

Raven – Humble Beginnings [2008] V2

Across its 15 tracks, Humble Beginning ranges in content from the reflective opening title track to the multisyllabic metaphors of “Nurture to the raw energy of “Live Shows. The album is a showcase of Raven’s abilities on the mic, but his production prowess is also on show, having handled more than half the album’s beats himself. To complete the sound of Humble Beginnings, Raven drafted some of Melbourne’s finest producers, including Geko, Methodz (Nuffsaid Records), Beat Clever and Discourse, while DJs Perplex (now 3x Australian DMC champion), Bogues and Kilo add the final flare to the release with there skills on the ones and twos. Lyrically, Raven is assisted on the mic by the Hungry Humans crew: Budsa, Thorts, Autism, Geko, Aetcix, Sesh and Fatty Phew. From the backyard to the studio to the stage, Raven’s beginnings may have been humble, but the future is serious.
